Gettysburg Holistic Health Center - Integrative Wellness Practices
YOGA ROOTS & WINGS THERAPUTIC MASSAGE CHIROPRATIC ACUPUNCTURE TIMELESSLet me begin this letter by humbly thanking all of you who have helped us to reach our 6 th year of serving our community here at the Center. The time has passed quickly, and we have had a difficult time keeping up with our Newsletter. Although we now have a web site you can go to for information, there is nothing like a letter from friends. We are grateful to all of you who continue to support our efforts in bringing wellness to our community through our services.
Much has happened since you last received a letter from us. Donna Acree, ND left us last year to move back to Arizona to have her baby with her new husband Echjing. Their daughter Sage was born on Thanksgiving Day. Mother and baby are fine. Donna and family have recently moved back to the East Coast to reside in the Frederick area. The possibility of Donna returning to work at our Center is not out of the question. We will keep you posted as to if and when she will return to our Center.
We welcome our newest practitioner, Dr. Leonard Mazza from New Jersey. Len is a self-employed chiropractor with 19 years of experience. He gave up his practice to move to our area. He and his wife Lorraine are relocating to the 100-fold community. Please see the enclosed page detailing what Len has to offer his patients here at our Center. Len practices in Suite E with Ted O’Brien.
Also joining our Center is Carol Sweetman, M.S.O.M. LAc who currently practices in the Frederick and Bethesda areas. Carol is a licensed acupuncturist who provides facial rejuvenation. Carol has a wealth of experience in practicing holistic healthcare using acupuncture and Chinese M\medicine. With Carol’s technique you will look younger and feel better with a Timeless Facial and Body Rejuvenation. This is an alternative approach to looking younger without surgery and injection. Carol uses a program of advanced electro-medicine and ancient healing therapies of Traditional medicine. Rejuvenation is a non-invasive way to keep the signs of aging in check. Carol practices at our Center one day a week and by appointment only. Please read Carol’s page of information that is also enclosed.
As you probably noticed our Byline has changed from “Practices In Natural Healing” to “Integrative Wellness Practices.” You are probably wondering, What that has to do with me! Well, my goal from the inception of our Center has been to offer every individual who comes to us services that treat the whole person. When I think of Holistic I think of the “whole person” as well as natural wellness. Well what about the East and West coming together? Could that happen? I think so! Well it does in other areas of our country and it has been working well. I feel strongly that if we could bring together Traditional Medicine and Natural Healing in our community we would be treating the “whole person” physically, emotionally, and spiritually. This could help eliminate a lot of anxiety for our patients. Our practitioners are ready and willing to embark in this new arena. We are welcoming practitioners of the traditional medical community to join us in this endeavor. I am happy to report there is interest. As we continue I will keep you informed through our newsletter, web site, and most of all through our practitioners when you visit us.
Sit back and have a cup of tea as you read the rest of our Center’s news.
Namaste,
Lynn Roby
Center Founder

New From Roots and Wings CounselingDid you know that emotions are an integral part of your overall health? Emotions can and do affect all of us holistically. Emotions are powerful and cascades of stress chemicals can result from overloading of stress, anxiety, fear and anger. These chemicals can be stored in our physical bodies as toxins. There is an effective antidote in mindful awareness. Through self-awareness, meditation, imagery and practice we can become more peaceful, less stressed and more fully realize our true nature. Using these techniques we can create healthy emotional, mental and behavioral patterns that become permanent over time and affect our well-being in a holistic sense. Many stress related illnesses can be eased through learning and practicing these techniques.
A mindfulness based twelve week class will be offered that will help you tame your anger, anxiety and fear. The phenomenon of emotional hijacking can be stopped and you can transform your emotional life, putting you in the driver’s seat. Chiropractic: Who Needs It?In order to answer this question, it is helpful to first review a little bit of history. Chiropractic was founded by D.D. Palmer in 1895. Palmer was the equivalent of a holistic health practitioner of his time. On the block where his offices were located, there worked a deaf janitor named Harvey Lillard. When Palmer examined him, he felt a bone or vertebra out of place that, he reasoned, could be causing pressure on the spinal cord. He restored the alignment of the vertebrae by applying a force with his hand, which he called an adjustment. Lillard immediately noticed he was able to hear as before, for the first time in 17 years. D.D. Palmer coined the term chiropractic from the Greek words, Chiro, meaning “hand,” and practic, meaning “practice or operation.”
Chiropractic’s main area of interest is a condition called Vertebral Subluxation, which is comprised of four parts: (1) a vertebrae that has lost its proper position relative to a vertebrae above or below, or both; (2) a partial occlusion of an opening where the nerve passes through; (3) pressure on a nerve; and (4) an interference to the nerve impulses from the brain to the body, and the body to the brain. The objective of chiropractic is to locate, analyze and correct vertebral subluxations.
Chiropractic believes that the body possesses a unique innate wisdom that strives to maintain itself in a state of good health. This intelligence strives to maintain normal heart rate, blood pressure, insulin production, etc; this same intelligence also directs our bodily functions in continuously adapting to an ever-changing environment.
Maintenance of good health depends upon the body’s natural ability to continually adapt to changes in its internal and external environment. Ensuring this capability is one of nature’s most remarkable communication networks: the nerve system. The brain sends mental impulses to each of the body’s more than 100 trillion cells, giving them direction on how to function properly. At the same time, each part of the body is reporting information back to the brain; theses mental impulses are transmitted to and from the brain by way of the nerves passing through the spine
Vertebra in the spine can and, on occasion, do become subluxated, which is interference to the body’s communication process. A subluxation causes messages being transmitted over nerves to become garbled or modified; the body’s response to the environment is then inadequate. Chiropractic makes its contribution to health by identifying, analyzing, and correcting subluxated vertebrae. The doctor of chiropractic removes this particular kind of interference to the body’s innate striving to maintain its own health.
Chiropractic’s concern, then, is with vertebral subluxation and its influence on health and health maintenance. Its aim is to ensure that the body’s natural health-assurance process is allowed to function without interference from vertebral subluxation.
If you have a spine, you are subject to vertebral subluxation. Some of the causes of vertebral subluxation include physical, chemical, and emotional stresses, and in particular, automobile accidents, lifting, and job stress. One of the most significant traumas to the spine is the birth process, which is why all children should be checked as well. We all experience these stresses over the course of our lives and therefore most people have vertebral subluxations. So who needs chiropractic? Everyone!

Sticking it to Lower Back Pain!Low back pain is one of the most common symptoms that cause people to visit their doctor. In fact, back pain is the second leading cause of visits to a physician in the United States. In addition to these conventional treatments, many patients in today's society also seek complementary therapies such as acupuncture and yoga to reduce their low back pain.
Acupuncture and yoga are two of the most time-tested treatments known to mankind. If the value of a treatment were based solely on how long it has been around, and how long people have thought that it was helpful, then acupuncture and yoga would probably be the most effective treatments known to humankind. Fortunately today, the value of these therapies is being scientifically proven in blinded, controlled studies as well.
The use of acupuncture to treat back pain has increased dramatically in the past few decades, based in a large extent to placebo-controlled studies that have validated it as a reliable method of pain relief. The results of a recent study published in the Clinical Journal of Pain (2001) provide further proof that acupuncture is a safe and effective procedure for low-back pain, and that it can maintain positive outcomes for periods of six months or longer without producing the negative side-effects that often accompany more traditional pain remedies. Acupuncture works specifically by reducing inflammation, increasing the release of endorphins and pain relieving neurotransmitters such as serotonin in the brain and balancing the energetic structure of the body.
Yoga is another very helpful therapy that is not only very inexpensive to perform but can produce a wide range of benefits for back pain sufferers. Yoga incorporates stretching and relaxation, which reduces tension in stress-carrying muscles. Yoga requires that an individual hold gentle poses for anywhere from 10 to 60 seconds. Within the pose, certain muscles flex, while others stretch, promoting relaxation and flexibility in muscles and joints.
For people with lower back pain, stretching is very important. For example, stretching the hamstring muscles (in the back of the thigh) helps expand the motion in the pelvis, decreasing stress across the lower back. In addition, stretching with yoga increases blood flow, allowing nutrients to flow in, toxins to flow out, and promotes the overall nourishment of the muscles and soft tissues in the lower back. Many of the postures in yoga also gently strengthen the muscles in the back, as well as the abdominal muscles. Back and abdominal muscles are essential components of the muscular network of the spine, helping the body maintain proper upright posture and movement. When these muscles are well conditioned, back pain can be greatly reduced or avoided.
Think of the spine as a tall building, and the musculature around the spine as the support structure of this building. The strength and flexibility of the muscles along the spine and in the legs is essential at maintaining the integrity and support of the spinal column. Without this support, the pressure on the spinal column increases which can lead to problems such as herniated and bulging disks, especially in the lower back.
If you suffer from back pain, I encourage you to consider all options, do research and ask questions. Consider natural, non-invasive alternative therapies in addition to conventional treatments, and be aware of the powerful healing potential of the human frame.
